Creative Writing (CRW) Concentration Degree Requirements

This concentration focuses on creative writing in several genres, including fiction, poetry, and nonfiction.  Students take a range of courses in English studies as well as intensive writing workshops that enable writers to hone their modes of expression and develop creative approaches to written expression.


English Core Requirements

  • American Literature (3 credit hours)
  • British Literature (3 credit hours)
  • World Literature (3 credit hours)
  • World Literature (3 credit hours)
  • Film Studies (3 credit hours)
  • Linguistics (3 credit hours)
  • Rhetoric (3 credit hours)

Creative Writing Concentration Requirements

  • Creative Writing Electives (9 credit hours, including 3 hours at the 300 or 400 level)
  • Creative Writing Advanced Elective (3 credit hours at the 400 level, typically ENG 488 or ENG 489)
  • Literature Electives (6 credit hours)
  • English Electives  (3 credit hours)

Additional Requirements for CRW

  • Students can only take five 200-level courses total in the English Core and Creative Writing Concentration sections of your degree audit. This does not apply to 200-level courses in the CHASS and GEP sections of your degree audit.
  • All courses, except ENG 350, must be taken for a letter grade to satisfy department requirements.
  • Courses cannot be double counted between these two sections of your degree audit.
  • Students must earn a C- or better for a course to count toward major requirements.
  • The minimum GPA to graduate is 2.0.
  • 30 of your last 45 hours of coursework must be taken at NC State.
